The Life Extension Blog: 3 Supplements Every Woman Should Be Taking

We get a whole lot of inquiries from girls wondering that specific nutritional supplements (if any) that they should be carrying. .

For starters, the fundamental  “foundational” nutritional supplements like a multivitamin, CoQ10fish and fish oil apply universally to both men and women. However, because many ladies understand, their specific conditions can be very different than guys.

In this informative article, we will chat about three more nutritional supplements that all girls should be doing. Note that we’re not adding  hormone balance here, as it’s a complex topic and hints fluctuate considerably from woman to woman.

Indole-3-Carbinol (I3C) Protects Against Cancer

Don’t be turned off by its own scientific sounding name! I3C is a substance found in cruciferous vegetables and is widely studied because of its hormone-modulating ability.

All women produce estrogen (even people who have gone through menopause), and all estrogen follows one of two pathways — it converts into 16-alpha-hydroxyestrone, or it converts into 2-hydroxyestrone. 1 For the sake of simplicity, we will refer to them since 16-α and 2-hydroxy.

When there’s a higher amount of 16-α, the risk for developing cancers like that of the breast and cervix is raised. On the other hand, when there’s a greater amount of 2-hydroxy, the probability of the cancers is diminished. 2,3

I3C has demonstrated the capability to regulate the estrogen pathway, supporting the conversion of estrogen to the protective 2-hydroxy, as well as lowering levels of the more harmful 16-α. 4,5

Also of interest is that the National Cancer Institute has determined I3C to be more powerful than over 80 other all-natural substances demonstrated to be associated with decreasing cancer risk. 6

Cranberry Extract Protects Against UTIs

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the most common kind of bacterial infections. 7 UTIs are due to the attachment of bacteria like E. coli into urinary tract cells, resulting in pain, urinary frequency, and in certain cases can result in kidney infection.

Women are more prone to UTIs than men since they have shorter urethras, which makes it much easier for germs to get to the urinary tract. Actually, by age 24, 1 third of all girls will have experienced a UTI that requires antifungal treatment. 7 After a young girl has contracted a UTI, their reoccurrence risk is 20 percent. 8

The standard treatment for UTIs is antibiotics that could have various unwanted side effects. Studies have indicated that more safe and natural alternatives exist!

Cranberry infusion has proven the ability to prevent harmful microbes from binding and colonizing from the gastrointestinal tract, thus lowering the chance of infection. 9-12

A study of elderly women with recurrent UTIs revealed that cranberry infusion was about as powerful as antibiotics at preventing infections, but without some of the harmful side effects! 13

Vitamin D is crucial for Women

This might seem clear since vitamin D is essential for so many facets of wellness. But, vitamin D is also very important for women.

Vitamin D has been demonstrated to block cancer-stimulating signs while enhancing signs that inhibit cancer growth. 14-17 Research has shown that girls who have vitamin D levels across 52 ng/ml have roughly a 50% lower chance of developing breast cancer, as compared to individuals with levels lower than 13 ng/ml. 18

Furthermore, vitamin D can be essential for strong bones which is essential since girls have a greater risk of osteoporosis than women. 19,20

Many people need approximately 5,000 IU of vitamin D daily to maintain a desired blood level.

The Bottom Line

You don’t necessarily need to take handfuls of nutritional supplements to keep your health up to par. In addition to a solid foundational routine, if you’re taking I3C, cranberry, and vitamin D, then you should be pretty well-covered.
